Authentication of US Documents

The procedure for authenticating documents produced by local or federal authorities is as follows:

In principle, the Consulate General of Haiti will only legalize/authenticate documents that have previously been legalized/authenticated by the Department of State (Florida)

That said, a document notarized at State level must first be legalized by the State Department of the State in question

In a nutshell:

1. Sign the document before a notary public.
2. Authentication of the notary public’s signature by the Secretary of State of the state where the notary resides.
3. Authenticate the signature or seal of the Secretary of State’s office in the State
4. Finally, submit the document to the Consulate General of Haiti.

La procédure pour l’authentification de documents produits par les autorités locales ou fédérales est la suivante :

En principe, le Service Consulaire de l’Ambassade ou d’un Consulat Général d’Haïti ne légalise/authentifie que les documents préalablement légalisés/authentifiés par le Département d’Etat des Etats-Unis qui se trouve à Washington, DC.

Ceci dit, un document notarié au niveau d’un Etat doit être d’abord légalisé par le Département d’Etat de l’Etat en question, ensuite légalisé par le Département d’Etat des Etats-Unis qui est localisé à Washington, DC.

En résumé :

1. Signer le document devant un notaire public ;
2. Authentifier la signature du notaire public par le Secrétaire d’État de l’État où réside le notaire ;
3. Authentifier par le Département d’État des États-Unis d’Amérique la signature ou le cachet du bureau du Secrétaire d’État de l’Etat concerné ;
4. Enfin, soumettre le document au Consulat General of Haiti.
